Acclaimed Palestinian chef, Laila El-Haddad, co-author of The Gaza Kitchen, will be in Adelaide for a one-night-only cooking demonstration following her appearance at the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival.

Chef Laila El-Haddad will demonstrate a unique recipe exploring the exquisite flavours of Gaza, while taking us on a journey through a region which may be geographically tiny but is home to culinary traditions as rich as the resilience and culture of the Gazan people.

Positioned between southern Arabia and the Mediterranean on an ancient spice route, Gazan cooking is distinct from other cuisines in the Levant.

Join Laila for a cooking demonstration followed by Q&A, meal tasting (vegetarian) and drinks, plus the opportunity to buy her book.

About Laila El-Haddad

For years, Palestinian writer Laila El-Haddad has been documenting daily life in Gaza - with a journalist’s eye for detail, a chef’s instinct for taste and smell and a mother’s hopes and anxieties for the future.

As a reporter, El-Haddad’s work has appeared in the Washington Post, New Statesman and the Guardian and on the BBC, CNN and al Jazeera. Some of her most compelling work, however, has been published on her award-winning blog, Gaza Mom, which she started back in 2004. The blog interweaves personal stories with grassroots reporting, political opinion and amazing local recipes. Gaza Mom, she writes, is ‘about the trials of raising my children between spaces and identities; displacement and occupation; and everything that entails – from potty training to border crossings.’

Laila is an award-winning Palestinian writer, social activist, and public speaker, who frequently lectures on the situation in Gaza, the intersection of food and politics, and contemporary Islam. She is the author of Gaza Mom: Palestine, Politics, Parenting, and Everything In Between and, co-author of the critically acclaimed The Gaza Kitchen: A Palestinian Culinary Journey.  She is also a policy advisor with al-Shabaka, the Palestinian Policy Network.

Laila El-Haddad’s visit is supported by the Australian Jewish Democratic Society.

This event hosted by the Australian Friends of Palestine Association.
