Adelaide Palestine Solidarity Rally

Sunday 11 August 2024

The genocide in Gaza continues unabated after 10 months. Not content with the bloodshed in Gaza, Israel is trying to spark a regional war through its assassination of Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and its killings of Hezbollah commanders in Lebanon.

The stakes are ever higher. We must not be intimidated or deterred. We must continue to rally and tell the Australian Government and our representatives that Australia must act according to international law. In the wake of the International Court of Justice ruling of 19 July 2024, a group of 38 independent UN human rights experts, appointed by the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva as part of its special procedures, have called on UN member states to impose an arms embargo and targeted sanctions on Israel.

In a joint statement the experts urged UN member states to "immediately review all diplomatic, political, and economic ties with Israel, inclusive of business and finance, pension funds, academia and charities." They called on member states to implement an immediate and complete embargo on the sale of arms, munitions and other military equipment to Israel.

We demand the same of our federal government, our state government and our financial, academic and other institutions.

Our demands are:

  • an immediate and permanent ceasefire

  • that unfettered humanitarian aid immediately is allowed into Gaza

  • that our government imposes sanctions on Israel

  • that our government recalls the Australian ambassador to Israel and expels the Israeli Ambassador to Australia

  • that Australia establishes an arms embargo on Israel and all defense materiel produced in Australia is banned from being sent to Israel

  • an end to the occupation and apartheid.

This rally’s guest speaker is Amanda Ruler from the Medical Association for Prevention of War. Amanda will mark the 79th anniversary of Hiroshima Day and relate that horror to what is happening in Gaza. She will tell us about the work her association.
