“Naila and the Uprising”

Sydney, NSW

2019-05-sydney-film.jpg

A documentary revealing the lesser known role of women in the First Intifada, Naila and the Uprising follows the unflinching dedication of Palestinian women like Naila in the fight towards freedom.

The experience of this mass uprising against decades of Israel’s authoritarian occupation saw ordinary Arab and Palestinian women break from tradition and lunge into political activities. As Israeli authorities attempted to quash the resistance by closing universities and encouraging the IDF to “break their bones”, women in particular organised new ways of teaching the next generation the history of the occupation and resistance. These women took up political leadership to help sustain the grassroots level of the intifada even as the Israeli defence minister sought to terrorise participants.

A great history of radical women taking their own rights into their own hands.
