Slamalamadingdong! August Slam feat. Remi Kanzi
Victoria
Slama acknowledges that our slam takes place in Naarm, on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded, no treaty was signed and it always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
---
It's a new season, well new-half of the Slama's two year season and after Grand Slam, a bunch of off-season slams and our national team slam, we're back and can't wait to throw ourselves into open slamming. Standard rules, anyone can throw their hat in the ring.
And we've got a special feature performance from Palestinian-American poet, Remi Kanazi.
ABOUT REMI KANAZI
Remi is a poet and writer based in New York. He is the author of two collections of poetry, Before the Next Bomb Drops: Rising Up From Brooklyn to Palestine and Poetic Injustice: Writings on Resistance and Palestine. Kanazi is the editor of Poets For Palestine. His political commentary has been featured by news outlets throughout the world, including The New York Times, NowThis!, Salon, Al Jazeera English, and BBC Radio. His poetry has taken him across the US, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East, and he has appeared in the Palestine Festival of Literature as well as Poetry International. He is a Lannan Residency Fellow and an Advisory Committee member for the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.
THE SLAM
Slama is a three-round poetry slam, judged by random (but fairly represented) members of the audience. You've got 3 minutes to perform a poem of your own original work, with no props or costumes. You must not repeat poems previously used in an open slam (Grand Slams, off-season slams don't count) from August 2018 onwards.
The top 6 from the first round go to the second round, and the top 3 from the second round's cumulative scores go to the final round, and one is crowned winner each month. 1st place wins $50 cash and a video on the Melbourne Spoken Word video channels.
If you want to slam, you have to show up at 6.30pm sharp and at 6.45pm, we draw 12 names from the hat. If your name is not drawn, you can be guaranteed entry for next month.
